Akira Blount has been designing and making dolls and figures since 1969, and is one of the major figures who helped elevate the doll from trivial toy to art object. As an educator, she has promoted and encouraged experimentation and innovation in the field. She is president of the National Institute of American Doll Artists, and her work is displayed in museum collections worldwide—including the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and the White House Collection of American Craft.
