At present, the Sterling list is composed primarily of topics such as: parenting & family, diet & health, math & science, pop culture & humor, relationships, history, light reference, business, and cookery. Sterling Ethos is a rich list that covers all aspects of body, mind & spirit; new age; self improvement; and spirituality. Sterling Innovation publishes our kits and other unique format items, as well as gift, humor, pop culture, and wine & spirits. Union Square Press publishes in a variety of areas including adventure; biography; culture; current and international affairs; environmental, political and social issues. Finally, all books on puzzles and games, including: crosswords; cryptograms; sudoku; logic puzzles; and I.Q. builders are published under the Puzzlewright Press imprint.

Proposals on subjects such as crafting, decorating, outdoor living, and photography should be sent directly to Lark Books at their Asheville, North Carolina offices. Complete guidelines can be found on the Lark site: www.larkbooks.com/submissions.

At present, Sterling does not publish fiction.

Children’s Books

Sterling’s children’s list includes picture books and non-fiction. We do not publish fictional chapter books or novels. Our non-fiction list primarily focuses on activity-based subjects, such as: crafts, activities, puzzles (math/word/picture/logic), and science experiments. We also have a small focus on history and biographies.

Submissions Guidelines

Please write to us explaining your idea and enclose an outline and a sample chapter of the proposed book (typed and double-spaced, please) along with sample illustrations where applicable. For Children’s books, please submit full manuscripts. We do not accept electronic (e-mail) submissions. Be sure to include information about yourself with particular regard to your skills and qualifications in the subject area of your submission. It is helpful for us to know your publishing history—whether or not you’ve written other books and, if so, the name of the publisher and whether those books are currently in print.

Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. We will not return any materials submitted to us unless you specifically request that materials be returned and include, along with your submission, a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Please note that, due to the volume of mail received, we cannot guarantee the return of unsolicited material. Please do not send original art or irreplaceable work of any kind; while we will make every effort to return your submissions if requested, we are not responsible for any loss or damage.

Submissions should be sent to the attention of the appropriate category editor, e.g., a proposal on parenting should be addressed to the “Parenting Editor”; a crossword puzzle proposal should be addressed to the “Puzzle Editor”; and so on. All children’s book submissions should be sent to the attention of the “Children’s Book Editor.”

Submissions should be sent to:
“______” Editor
Sterling Publishing Co., Inc.
387 Park Avenue South, 11th floor
New York, NY 10016-8810

We will contact you as soon as we are able via either letter or telephone. We are constantly reviewing new proposals, and given the volume of submissions we receive; it may take several months for a reply. We sincerely appreciate your patience on this.

Thank you for your interest in Sterling.
